Maria Hupfield, Double Triangles, 2018 Sequin fabric, ribbons, wood structure on wheels 59″ h Sold Double Triangles (2018) was made at the Triangle Arts DUMBO Residency and worn by Maria Hupfield and New York–based, long-term collaborator Electric Djinn during The Kind of Dream You’ve Never Seen, a performance in two 25-minute segments in July 2018 at the Brooklyn Museum, New York.

Taking the form of an exhibition tour, this performance provides an ‘in-the-moment’ encounter with an artist in the museum, emphasizing the value of shared experience in the creation and memory of a work of art.”

Moridja Kitenge Banza, Chiromancie #12 – Goma n°1, 2021 Acrylic and sand on canvas 122 x 122 cm (48” x 48”) Sold “The idea of the sand is to refer to the street where I grew up which was my childhood territory. I also chose this medium for the sake of finding texture. This series has a subtitle: “Goma.” I am referring to a city in the Congo where since 1994 there has been political instability…and this year a volcanic eruption. In this series, I am combining the trace of the volcano lava with the lines of my hand.”

Manuel Mathieu, Family Portrait, 2021 Mixed media and burnt fabric on canvas 183 x 152,5 cm (72” x 60”) Sold “Family Portrait (2021) was produced during a residency in Sonoma, California. This is the first work that incorporates strips of burnt fabric. I searched for a way to anthropomorphize these bands. The resulting red circles refer to eyes for me. They are organized as if it were a family portrait against a landscape background. This research contributes to my reflections on symbolism.”
Manuel Mathieu, Black Tongue, 2021 Mixed media on canvas 91,5 x 91,5 cm (36” x 36”) Sold “Black Tongue (2021) was also produced in Sonoma. The work revealed itself to me during its construction. I noticed the form of a tongue at the bottom left of the composition. A character is oscillating between a figure and a landscape. By titling the painting this way, I accept the presence of that character and invite the viewer to imagine it with me.”
Manuel Mathieu, The Window, 2021 Mixed media and fabric on canvas 101,5 x 101,5 cm (40” x 40”) Sold “I have often thought of paintings as windows—an opening onto something set within a frame that determines our gaze. In The Window (2021), I am using fabric as a way of reaffirming this framing. In another work, Outside Window (2018), I play again with this idea of a frame within a frame. It makes me wonder which side of the window are we on? Are we looking outside or inside? And inside of what? I like that a painting can fuel these kinds of thoughts.”
Manuel Mathieu, Following an Idea, 2021 Mixed media on canvas 61 x 61 cm (24” x 24”) Sold “Following an Idea (2021) belongs to a series of paintings (Searching for an idea 1 and 2 and Waking up with an idea) that deals with the visualization of an idea. In this painting, the fluidity of the paint suggests that this idea can be guided by the material properties of the medium.”
Shuvinai Ashoona, Untitled, 2020 Ink and pastel on paper (UNFRAMED) 76 x 58,5 cm (29,9” x 23”) 2800 CAD Shuvinai’s work is unique among the artists working in Kinngait. Her drawings imagine the past and present fused into a prophetic future such as human-animal hybrid creatures, women birthing worlds, and mystical or other-worldly landscapes clearly inspired by the terrain of her northern home.
David Lafrance, Concombre la nuit, 2021 Ink on paper (FRAME INCLUDED) 73,7 x 53,3 cm (29” x 21”) 3000 CAD Lafrance’s new artworks bear witness to closely scrutinized nature as he keels down in the garden to contemplate its slow rhythm. Sitting on his stool, the artist discovers what is immediate to him and within reach, in pure reciprocity and symbiosis with his subject.
Cindy Phenix, Tolerance for Ambiguity, 2021 Oil and color pencil on wood panel 30,5 x 22,9 cm (12” x 9”) 5000 USD Cindy Phenix’s work focuses on the relationship between the public and private spheres. She explores the various norms that govern them, the dynamic of their coexistence, the power relations they are the site of and the emotions they trigger. To this end, the artist creates complex scenes that convey powerful narrative and affective movements.
