Shuvinai Ashoona

A 3rd generation artist based in Kinngait, Nunavut, Shuvinai Ashoona (b. 1961) has gained international recognition for her fantastical renderings of the natural world and striking depictions of contemporary Inuit life. Combining references to Indigenous cosmologies and her youth on the territory now known as Dorset Island, Ashoona fuses scenes of daily life with futurist visions of species interdependence.

Her work was previously featured in the curated section of the 2022 Venice Biennial “The Milk of Dreams”, for which she was awarded the Special Mention of the Jury. She has had solo exhibitions at the Power Plant Toronto and ICA Miami and was awarded the Gershon Iskowitz Prize (2018) and the Canadian Governor General’s Award (2024). Galerie Hugues Charbonneau has most recently presented Ashoona’s work in Montreal (including collaborative pieces with Padloo Samayualie) and at NADA Miami alongside Manuel Mathieu. Her works can be found in the collections of the Tate Modern, MoMA, and several museums across Canada.
