Manuel Mathieu
Manuel Mathieu (b. 1986) is a multi-disciplinary artist, working with painting, ceramics, film and installation. Mathieu’s interests are partially informed from his upbringing in Haiti – just after the fall of the Duvalier dictatorship – and his experience emigrating to Montréal at the age of 19. His art investigates themes of historical violence, erasure, resilience and cultural approaches to physicality, nature and spiritual legacy.
He obtained an MFA Degree from Goldsmiths, University of London. He has had solo exhibitions at the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts, the Power Plant (Toronto), K11 (Shanghai), the Longlati Foundation (Beijing) and the Museum of Contemporary Art North Miami. His work was featured in the 2024 Toronto Biennial of Art. The Max Ernst Museum (Brühl) will present an exhibition dedicated to Mathieu’s work in 2025.
Shuvinai Ashoona
In her drawings, Shuvinai Ashoona reveals the profundity of Indigenous Inuk cosmogonies. She reveals an existence in which species are interdependent and creates a universe unmediated by the supremacy of the human species. Acknowledging the violences of the colonial enterprise in her work, Ashoona proposes possibilities of escaping the cul-de-sac by listening in, listening back, and listening forward to Indigenous knowledge.
Among Ashoona’s works that will be displayed in the Galerie Hugues Charbonneau booth are those which received the Special Mention of the Jury at the 2022 Venice Biennale.
