In her drawings, Shuvinai Ashoona reveals the profundity of Indigenous Inuk cosmogonies. She reveals an existence in which species are interdependent and creates a universe unmediated by the supremacy of the human species. Acknowledging the violences of the colonial enterprise in her work, Ashoona proposes possibilities of escaping the cul-de-sac by listening in, listening back, and listening forward to Indigenous knowledge.
Solo exhibitions of Ashoona’s work have been organized at The Perimeter, (London), The Power Plant (Toronto), Art Gallery of Ontario (Toronto), Nunatta Sunakkutaangit Museum (Iqaluit), and countless others. Shuvinai Ashoona was awarded the Gershon Iskowitz Prize (2018) and the Canadian Governor General’s Award (2024). Her work was featured in the official curated section of the 2022 Venice Biennial “The Milk of Dreams”, for which she was awarded the Special Mention of the Jury.
